Thomas Risdon junior

All we know from the lineage charts produced following the Heralds’ Visitation is that he was living in 1620, and that he died on the 9th of October, 1641. Willcocks’s details are again wrong here, because he states that Thomas junior was called to the bar in 1592; his Bench date of 1610 is correct, however. The pledges were given by his elder brother Giles and his cousin Philip. At some stage, he bought an estate or house called Sandwell,1 in the area of Harberton, a couple of km to the south west of Totnes, Devon, which explains how Prince could have mistakenly stated that a Thomas Risdon (the wrong one) was Recorder of Totnes when, in fact, he was Recorder of Torrington for the year 1620;2 he was also a Justice of the Peace for the county of Devon for the year 1630.3 The jump from high to low page numbers for the extracts below from the Calendar is explained by the transition from volume I to volume II.

Whereas divers gentlemen of the Middle Temple intending to erect a new building in Pump Court, next adjoining to Hare’s Court, belonging to this House, the benchers of both Societies and some of the gentlemen whom the building particularly concerned, did several times confer about the same, when the gentlemen of the Middle Temple endeavoured to go further with their building than their own ground; whereupon it was directed that the workmen of both Houses should view and stake out how far the foundations should go, which was done in the presence of the gentlemen interested. Nevertheless the foundation, as it is now laid, extends further into the Inner Temple ground than was intended, it is therefore ordered that the Middle Temple shall proceed no further with the said building till reformation be made of this error and till the earth already laid in the Temple Lane be removed and carried away and the ground laid level, as the same was before, and paved to the water side, and also that the ceiling of the Middle Temple chambers in the cloisters be amended. And it is further ordered that Risden and Pritherge shall examine by whose means or direction the Middle Temple exceeded those bounds which were allowed them.

Cholmeley and Risden ordered to view the condition of the chamber of Henry Rolles and report to the board.

PARLIAMENT held on 3 November, 7 Charles I., A .D. 1631, before RICHARD BROWNLOWE, WILLIAM FLETCHER, NICHOLAS CHOLMELEY, THOMAS RISDON, and others. SIR RICHARD SHILTON, treasurer. [p. 190-91]

It is desired that Risdon, Fairwell, and Leving “will examine what exercises of learning have failed within this House during the time of the last long vacation and through whose default”, and also what are the causes that the exercises of learning at the Inns of Chancery do so often fail there, as lately they have done through default of the gentlemen of those Houses.

PARLIAMENT held on 13 November, 7 Charles I., A.D. 1631, before WILLIAM FLETCHER, NICHOLAS CHOLMELEY, THOMAS RISDON, ADAM SCAMLER, and others. SIR RICHARD SHILTON, treasurer. [p. 192]

PARLIAMENT held on 13 May, 8 Charles I., A.D. 1632, before EDWARD LITTLETON, THOMAS RISDON, ADAM SCAMLER, and others. SIR RICHARD SHILTON, treasurer. [p. 196]

Order that William Browne, an utter barrister, who was supended from commons in Lent vacation last by the bar then in commons, be restored, and that Cholmley, Risdon, Prythergh, and Tratman call before them the said Browne and some others of the bar then in commons, and examine the causes of his suspension, and what power and authority the bar has, when the bench is out of commons, to suspend one of the bar, and what precedents there are on the point.

Forasmuch as the commons and other charges of this House have of late times much increased, and yet the House is served with far worse provisions than in former times when commons were at a far lower rate than now they are, whereby the House has been muchprejudiced and the gentlemen have made great complaints, which abuse is conceived to be occasioned by the negligence of the officers, it is desired that Cholmeley, Risdon, Prithergh, and Tratman will inquire into the matter.

PARLIAMENT held on 3 June, 8 Charles I., A.D. 1632, before EDWARD LITTLETON, ELIZE HEALE, THOMAS RISDON, and others. SIR RICHARD SHILTON, treasurer. [p. 196]

Upon report by Risdon it was found that the cause of William Browne’s suspension was that he made default in not doing the exercises of the House, and it did not appear that the bar did ever at any time heretofore suspend one of the bar for not doing of exercise, but used in such cases to complain to the bench at their coming into commons. It is therefore ordered that the bar ought not at any time to suspend any other of the bar for want of doing of exercise, but are to refer the consideration and punishment thereof to the bench, when they shall come into commons.

PARLIAMENT held on 17 June, 8 Charles I., A.D. 1632, before EDWARD LITLETON, NICHOLAS CHOLMELEY, THOMAS RISDON, and others. SIR RICHARD SHILTON, treasurer. [p. 197]

PARLIAMENT held on 13 October, 9 Charles I., A.D. 1633, before EDWARD LITLETON, TIMOTHY LEVING, EDWARD TRATMAN, and others. SIR RICHARD SHELTON, treasurer. [p. 207]

Whereas William Perkins, John Madox, and Thomas Andrewes, inhabitants of Fleet Street, have preferred their petition, that there has been time out of mind a fountain of water in the house of the said Perkins, which served this House for their necessary use, and this House, having lately taken in the New River water, has discontinued the said fountain, whereby the petitioners’ cellars are overflowed with water, they therefore pray they may turn the water into the common shore [sic] of this House, which matter is referred to Cholmeley, Risdon, Prithergh, and Farrar.

PARLIAMENT held on 27 April, 10 Charles I., A.D. 1634, before EDWARD LITLETON, THOMAS RISDON, ADAM SCAMLER, and others. SIR RICHARD SHELTON, treasurer. [p. 212-13]

Orders for the pension to be assessed at 4s. for the half year; that the petition of Abraham Corselles and Stephen Webb, brewers, for payment of money owing to them be referred to Prythergh, Leving, Martyn, and Denn ; that Cholmeley, Risdon, and Scamler shall call the cook before them and examine the abuses in taking unwarrantable fees out of the beef and mutton spent in the House; that the steward on account of the dearness of meat be allowed 3½d. a pound for beef and 17d. for a loin of mutton.

PARLIAMENT held on 22 June, 10 Charles I., A.D. 1634, before THOMAS RISDON, ADAM SCAMLER, RICHARD PRYTHERGH, and others. SIR RICHARD SHELTON, treasurer. [p. 214]

There is no reference in the Calendar to Thomas’s death, which occurred on the 9th of October, 1641; it is most likely that he was buried at Harberton. The Heralds’ lineage chart does not show any children for Thomas, so he appears to have been the last of the six members of this family to attend the Inner Temple. Both his cousin Philip of Buckland Brewer, who died in 1640, and his elder brother Giles of Bableigh, who died in 1632, had extensive families, but no occupation or status (such as ‘gentleman’) is shown for any of them, so the family’s somewhat elevated status in the English Establishment seems to have terminated with Thomas Risdon junior; he no doubt died a wealthy man, but ownership of his estate at Sandwell appears to have transferred to his grand nephew Thomas, who is not shown as having any family of his own. Sandwell remained in the possession of the Risdon family until 1708, or thereabouts (see note 1), but the latter Thomas died in 1667 at the age of 30, so which member of the family retained possession until the final Thomas sold it, and what the relationship was, is unknown.
